Why Fitness? Why Move?
Hello! My name is Sarah Zmay and I am a fitness professional and movement teacher. Thank you for your interest in hiring me!
If I am going to be honest, it was hard for me to write this about page. I can tell you all the ways I am passionate about movement, the human body, and people in general. How fitness has helped me stay grounded in times of struggle, and helped me feel empowered, but I think that there was a lot missing the previous story that was once on this page.
When my boyfriend asked me one day, WHY I did what I did. I felt like I didn’t really have an answer. Yes, I enjoy fitness, yes I love helping people reach their goals and feel better overall. But what about fitness and movement made me want to do this day in and day out?
It took me about a year to come to a very clear answer. One that required me to look further back.
Growing up, my sister had a mild form of cerebral palsy and she also had epilepsy. Luckily, these disabilities did not stop her from living a full life as a child. She is able to walk, run, play sports, and do many of the things that other kids got to do.
However, her limitations got highlighted as she got older. We saw her sit on benches more at basketball games, not make the team at all, and as a result she became a little less outgoing. It wasn’t like she wasn’t good at these things, it was just that she was in between two worlds; not disabled enough, and not enough for the world. She would get angry and sad at home, and it became difficult to grow up with her.
As the younger sister, I watched as this transformation unfold. I witnessed my sister going from a fearless child to a very angry teenager. As a child this was difficult to witness because I knew what my sister was capable of, and yet, she could not help but listen to the world define who she was.
I didn’t know it at the time, but I was witnessing how societal and environmental factors can effect how we embody moving through the world, and how that has a direct correlation in our emotional and mental wellbeing. I understood at a young age how important it was to be able to move our bodies freely; meaning, dance even when you suck at dancing, sing when you aren’t the best singer, play the sport if it brings you joy!
I suppose this is where my inspiration to move and my fascination of the human body began; as I watched my sister struggle. Ultimately, my sister has been a source of inspiration and love for me. Her strength and resilience have shown me that anything is possible if you believe in yourself (as cheesy as that is!)
What exercise and movement mean to me, is more than flat abs, a toned body, and what you see on the outside. Exercise and movement to me, is about who you become on the inside as a result of moving your body. Even as limiting beliefs pop up, even when people on the outside harshly criticize! When you keep moving as these obstacles arise, beyond all of it, is where the gold is! In spite of any limitations, you can still move in some way. You can move emotion, you can move thoughts, you can move sensations, you can move your breath, and in the end, this is what keeps us alive and present for the miracle that is life in front of us!
